Refugee Health Screening

Washington’s Refugee Health Screening works with local public health departments and private health care providers to offer newly arriving refugees a comprehensive screening and examination. Follow-up care and referrals for other necessary services are also provided.

The purpose of the health exam is to:

Follow up on any conditions identified in the overseas medical examination.
Identify and treat persons with communicable diseases to reduce the spread of infectious disease.
To identify conditions that may adversely impact a person’s ability to become self-sufficient.

Health Insurance Glossary

Apple Health
In Washington State, Medicaid is called Apple Health. Apple Health provides preventative care, like cancer screenings, treatment for diabetes and high blood pressure, and many other health care services.

Medicaid
Medicaid in the United States is a government program that helps with healthcare costs for some people with limited income and resources.

Medicare
Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people who are 65 or older and certain younger people with disabilities.

Apple Health for Adults

You may be eligible for Apple Health for Adults coverage if you:

Are age 19 through 64.
Have annual household income at or below the Medicaid standard (see income chart below).*
Are a U.S. citizen or meet Medicaid immigration requirements.
Are not entitled to Medicare. (Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people who are 65 or older and certain younger people with disabilities.)

Alien Emergency Medical Program

What is it?

The Alien Emergency Medical Program is an emergency medical program for individuals who do not meet the citizenship or immigration status requirements of other Apple Health programs.

Who is eligible?

Individuals with a qualifying medical condition, which includes at least one of the following:

Emergency room care, inpatient admission, or outpatient surgery;
A cancer treatment plan;
Dialysis treatment;
Anti-rejection medication for an organ transplant

How to Apply:

You can apply online at https://www.washingtonconnection.org or by completing the Application for Long-Term Care/Aged, Blind, Disabled Coverage (HCA 18-005). This application can be downloaded from the Health Care Authority website.

Pregnancy Medical Program

You may be eligible for Apple Health for Pregnant individuals coverage if you:

Are pregnant.
Live in Washington State.
Have income at or below 193% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) (see income chart below).*
